RIP Dixie Evans, Burlesque Legend and Inspiration to a Generation of Performers

Dixie Evans leading a tour at BHoF in Las Vegas

The Burlesque Hall of Fame is saddened to announce the passing of Dixie Evans at age 86. Dixie launched the Exotic World museum in Helendale, CA and founded the Miss Exotic World pageant in 1991. More than that, she was a support and inspiration for an entire generation of new performers who made “the pilgrimage” to Helendale throughout the ’90s and early 2000s. She died peacefully following a stroke earlier this year. Her passing will leave a giant hole in the community and in our hearts.

I was lucky enough to meet Miss Evans when she was still on the ranch. She walked us through her collection and told us stories about many of the pictures and artifacts. I commented on one of the pictures of her that she had up – it was very pin-up looking…and I really liked it. When we set to take our leave, she presented that picture to me, right off the wall, with her autograph and inscription. I still have that, framed on my wall.

I was employed in the nonprofit sector at the time and she asked me advice on how to get real funding for her museum…as she was in the desert of California and I in Michigan, there was not much I could do for her, but I did send her information and ideas although I knew they would not be very helpful. I remember saying Vegas would be the best spot for it but she was not keen on Vegas at that time…I got the impression she really loved her ranch.

I told her what she needed was to find someone as passionate as she and that had the time, geographic proximity and skill set to help her pull together the more formal museum she envisioned. I am so happy that she found her way to that person or persons and found her way to Vegas. I look forward to visiting the museum next time I am in Vegas.

She was an extraordinary individual. The woman had moxie and sass…she was fabulous! Goodbye Dixie.
