Grand Opening: June 4, 2010

On June 4, 2010, the creme de la creme of  international burlesque society turned out to celebrate an exciting new chapter in Burlesque Hall of Fame history: the grand opening of our new location inside the Emergency Arts building at 520 Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman was on hand to help Dixie Evans cut the ceremonial pink feather boa, along with the legendary Tempest Storm, Miss Exotic Worlds Catherine D’Lish (’92, ’94), Stephanie Blake (’97, ’98), Kitten DeVille (’02), Dirty Martini (’04), Michelle L’amour (’05), Julie Atlas Muz (’06), Angie Pontani (’08) and Kalani Kokonuts (’09), as well as soon-to-be Reigning Queen, Roxi Dlite (’10), and former “Girl Next Door”-turned Burlesque starlet, Holly Madison.

Just because the movie Burlesque is now on the big screen, doesn’t mean the art of striptease will make a comeback. In fact, burlesque has been growing in popularity for a long time. “The movie has sparked mainstream interest,” says Cleveland burlesque performer Danielle Squeal. “But burlesque has been an underground phenomenon on the East and West coasts for years — and it’s starting to catch on here.”

Burlesque vs. # burlesque

By now I’m sure you’ve heard about the new movie Burlesque, which features no actual burlesque. It’s got the BQ community up in a tizzy; and understandably so – some of us have been working in this genre for a decade or longer, so when you claim to make a film about our artform but the final product doesn’t actually showcase said artform, well, we’re going to be a little annoyed. Imagine making a film called Breakdancers that focuses exclusively on clogging, and you’ll get an idea about how some of us feel.

However, the always smart and savvy Penny Starr Jr. has devised an excellent publicity stunt that will channel the Burlesque hype back to us: a hashtag bomb!
